Los Angeles – The Writers Guild of America West Political Action Committee (WGAW PAC) announced its endorsement of Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman in the race for Los Angeles Mayor, citing her consistent record supporting organized labor and increased local film and television production.

“With organized labor under attack nationally, and television and film production leaving Hollywood, LA must elect a mayor who is committed to supporting entertainment workers. That’s why WGAW is proudly backing Nithya Raman, who has a real vision for protecting jobs and supporting the entertainment industry,” said WGAW President and PAC Board member Michele Mulroney. “She is a true pro-labor candidate who walks the walk. We need her leadership at the local level, now more than ever, and we are excited to be supporting her.”

In 2023, Raman walked the picket lines in solidarity with striking writers. She released her Save Hollywood Jobs plan in April to reverse the industry’s decline by staffing the LA Film Office with industry veterans to guarantee faster and more predictable permitting timelines, reduce or eliminate permit fees for smaller, independent productions, and streamline decades-old neighborhood filming restrictions that have made large parts of the city off-limits to shoots. Her plan would also push for more competitive, multi-year film tax credits at the state and federal level.

“I’m grateful to receive the endorsement of the Writers Guild of America West. Writers are the foundation of this industry, and Los Angeles cannot remain the world’s creative capital if the people who tell our stories can’t build stable careers or afford to live here,” said Raman. “As mayor, I’ll make City Hall an active partner in bringing production back, by speeding up permitting, reducing costs for smaller productions and making Los Angeles competitive again. As mayor, I will work alongside writers and entertainment workers to keep Hollywood jobs in Hollywood."

The WGAW PAC endorses candidates who support WGAW’s policy priorities of competition in media, protecting the right to organize, preserving union health and pension plans, regulation of artificial intelligence, and copyright protection, without regard to political affiliation. The WGAW PAC endorsed Raman in 2024 in her bid for Los Angeles City Council.

About Nithya Raman
Nithya Raman is running for mayor to make LA a city that works, to lower housing costs and to help save Hollywood jobs. Her path into politics began in her neighborhood, where as a working mom confronting homelessness on the streets she co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition. In 2020, she challenged an incumbent for City Council and built a movement of thousands of volunteers to win more votes than any Council candidate in LA history. On the Council, she has led the passage of the nation's strongest tenant protections, championed climate initiatives, and reduced unsheltered homelessness by 49 percent in her district even as it increased citywide—a record that shows what effective government can deliver.
